How the P2-RS works A lanyard attached to the jacket is clipped onto a lead afixed to the horse's saddle. Once the rider leaves the saddle during a fall, the lanyard detaches itself from the P2-RS, triggering the release of CO2 gas from a canister. The P2-RS will hold a rider tight for 15-20 seconds and then slowly deflate. Rigorous checks have been made on the inflated P2-RS to ensure it did not impede riders should they need to roll away from danger when on the ground. The P2-RS is fully reusable, and requires servicing annually or after every six falls. What the P2-RS protects The P2-RS inflates at speeds of up to 0.093 of a second, to provide enhanced protection to all the major thoracic and upper abdominal organs, the spine and the collar of the neck. It also helps guard against crushing injuries in the event of a rotational fall. Safety standards The RS2010 Racesafe body protector, approved to BETA 2009 Level 3, is incorporated into the P2-RS which has the added protection of Point Two air vest technology. The revolutionary P2-RS carries the European Standard EN 13158:2009 Level 3, which it meets when both inflated and uninflated. It is also available in a (non BETA-approved) EN 13158:2009 Level 1 version, for professional jockeys and use in FEI competition. Sizing, weight and spare parts The P2-RS is more comfortable, convenient and nearly 20% lighter than using a separate body protector and air jacket - as required in UK competition. Sizing is the same as Racesafe body protectors. Each garment is sold with a spare canister of CO2 gas, to be used for a test inflation on the retailer's premises at the point of sale, so riders can experience the sensation of the jacket being activated. All jackets come ready to use with bungee lanyard, saddle attachment and two canisters, one in the jacket and a spare. Every jacket is sold with a spare canister to give riders the opportunity to experience a test inflation of their new garment. It is highly recommended riders take advantage of this, so they know how the system works and how the jacket feels prior to a real accident.
